Black Sangria Recipe: 5 Bold Twists for Wine Lovers

August 1, 2025 by Maria Leave a Comment

(AKA the Moody, Mysterious Cousin of Classic Sangria)

You know regular sangria — fruity, bright, super sippable. Well, Black Sangria is like its moody, seductive cousin that listens to vinyl and only shows up after dark. It’s bold, rich, a little mysterious, and honestly… kind of addictive. Perfect for spooky season, date night, or anytime you want your drink to look as dramatic as it tastes.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1 bottle dry red wine (Cabernet or Tempranillo work great)
  • ½ cup brandy (or dark rum for extra depth)
  • ¼ cup triple sec or orange liqueur
  • 1–2 tablespoons brown sugar or maple syrup (optional, if you like it sweeter)
  • 1 cup blackberries (fresh or frozen)
  • 1 cup sliced plums or black grapes
  • 1 orange, thinly sliced (peel on)
  • 1 small apple, chopped
  • 1 cinnamon stick (trust me on this)
  • 1 can (12 oz) sparkling water or cola (for topping before serving — optional but fun)

🖤 Want it extra “black”? Toss in some black cherries or a splash of pomegranate juice for that deep, dark finish.

How to Make It:

1. Mix the Base

In a big pitcher, pour in the wine, brandy, triple sec, and sweetener. Stir until the sugar dissolves.

2. Add the Fruit

Throw in all that moody fruit — blackberries, plums, oranges, apples. Add the cinnamon stick and stir again.

3. Let It Chill

Cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours — overnight is even better. The longer it sits, the deeper the flavor.

4. Serve Over Ice

Pour over ice and top with sparkling water, cola, or just keep it strong and still. Garnish with more fruit if you’re feelin’ fancy.

Why You’ll Love It:

✔️ Looks dramatic and tastes amazing
✔️ Boozy but still fruity and refreshing
✔️ Super easy to make in a big batch
✔️ Totally customizable (swap fruits, booze, or fizz)
✔️ A hit at parties, especially in fall or Halloween!

Swaps & Variations

Want it to be…Try This 👇
Sweeter?Add a little honey or maple syrup
Darker?Use port wine or add pomegranate juice
Less Boozy?Cut the brandy in half or skip it
More Bubbly?Use sparkling red wine or soda water

FAQs

Can I use white wine instead of red?
Sure, but then it’s not “black” sangria — more like sangria in disguise.

What’s the best fruit combo?
Stick with dark, juicy fruits — plums, blackberries, grapes, and maybe a few cherries.

How far in advance can I make it?
You can make it up to 24 hours ahead. In fact, it tastes better after sitting overnight!

Does it keep well?
Yep! Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2–3 days. The fruit gets super boozy, so enjoy responsibly. 😅

Final Sip 🍷

This Black Sangria is rich, fruity, and just a little mysterious — basically the kind of drink that makes you feel cooler than you are. It’s easy to make, even easier to drink, and perfect for moody evenings, cozy gatherings, or impressing your friends with something other than boxed wine.
